E-Commerce in Indonesia and the Impacts

The growth of e-commerce in Indonesia these years has been very popular. In fact, it is known that the investment value of the e-commerce sector is very high, so e-commerce is classified as one of the most strategic economic sectors.

In fact, a number of surveys show that Indonesia is a country with the highest e-commerce growth in the world. It is known that the percentage of e-commerce growth in Indonesia reaches 78% per year! In fact, the second rank, which is Mexico, only has a growth rate of 59% per year. Of course, it can be seen that this difference is very remote and significant.

Naturally, the growth rate of e-commerce in Indonesia could be that big, because the number of online shopping sites in Indonesia is known to be hundreds. All of these e-commerce sites have a variety of product categories that can meet every person's needs, from electronics, clothing, health, beauty to hobbies.

If analyzed, the compound annual growth rate between 2015-2025 is around 41%. However, if the combined analysis of the annual growth rate is between 2015-2018, the proportion is 94%.

With this combined growth analysis, it is not surprising that the value of e-commerce in Indonesia reaches USD 12 trillion.

Transfer of Offline Shopping Transactions to Online

Indonesia is one of the countries with the most Muslims in the world. This makes Indonesia thick with the culture of Eid to celebrate Eid al-Fitr (Idul Fitri) after the month of Ramadan. One of the habits of the Eid culture is massive shopping.

In the past, when the digital realm had not yet spread in Indonesia, shopping was still done conventionally by coming to the market or shopping mall. In the past, malls and markets were filled and crowded with buyers. But now in the month of Ramadan in the last few years, e-commerce spending is known to have jumped up to 1.4 times.

Products that increase in purchases during Eid are not only fashion products, but also beauty and electronic products.

Online shopping habits have also not only increased during the Eid season, but also with the existence of Harbolnas (National Online Shopping Day). During the Harbolnas season, the increase in access to e-commerce also jumped 4 times.

During these seasons, sales of electronic products have increased by 1.5 times, clothing products have increased by 1.3 times, and beauty products have increased by 1.7 times.

Easier and Cheaper Purchasing Premium Imported Products

In the past, buying imported goods was quite difficult and more expensive. There are many procedures, tax and shipping costs that need to be fulfilled if you want to buy a premium imported goods. However, since the existence of e-commerce based at home and also abroad, the purchase and delivery of goods has become easier and cheaper.

With this convenience, the increase in purchasing premium imported products, especially beauty and care products, jumped 3.5 times in 2018. In fact, in 2016 the increase in purchases of premium imported products was only 2.5 times.

Premium clothing products also increased in sales thanks to e-commerce. In recent years, the most popular clothing mode is streetwear, which has increased the search for “luxury streetwear” by up to 6.3 times in the past two years.

E-Commerce = Convenience Store

The very rapid growth of e-commerce is also due to the completeness provided by this platform. Buyers are spoiled with various accessories that can be purchased without needing to go anywhere.

In fact, e-commerce also owns and offers sizable electronic products, such as air conditioners, refrigerators and TVs. However, it turns out that there are e-commerce user behaviors that can be considered. E-commerce users tend to search more for environmentally friendly products such as two-door refrigerators whose searches jumped 2.3 times or inverter air conditioners whose searches have jumped 1.7 times since 2016.

Not only that, sales of mobile phone accessories, which are generally inexpensive, are also widely sold in e-commerce. There are also many buyers of this product, as evidenced by a 1.6 times spike in searches for the keyword screen protector, the keyword for handphone casing 2.3 times, and the keyword for handphone cable 1.6 times.

The influence that the e-commerce phenomenon brings in Indonesia makes life a lot easier. This phenomenon is also considered to have brought many benefits to the Indonesian economic sector.

Unfortunately, the competition between one e-commerce and another is very tight. This is due to the large number of e-commerce emerging recently. Therefore, to increase the performance and popularity of e-commerce, you should use Google Ads, Youtube Ads, or Social Media Ads. These services are known to be effective in increasing popularity and attracting many potential customers to buy products in your e-commerce.
